Communication Fabric Theory

A foundational CFT concept

Sensory Matter Multiplex

Concurrent channels. Coherent intelligence.

Communication is not experienced as isolated events. Intelligence continuously integrates synchronized communication matter from external senses and internal cognitive processes.

Overview

Many streams, one experience

At every moment, multiple external, embodied, and internal channels create communication matter concurrently. Their associations form a coherent perception rather than a sequence of disconnected inputs.

Concurrent communication channels

Each channel independently contributes communication matter to cognition. Their simultaneity allows an intelligent system to construct a coherent perception rather than a sequence of disconnected inputs.

Focus or use a pointer on a channel to follow its path.

Multiplexed matter

One apple, many streams

Eating an apple simultaneously creates visual, auditory, tactile, taste, olfactory, motor, memory, and emotional communication matter. The Cognitive Association Graph integrates these synchronized streams into a single coherent experience.

  • Visual: color, shape, and motion
  • Auditory: the sound of the bite
  • Tactile: texture, weight, and pressure
  • Taste and olfactory: flavor and aroma
  • Motor: grip, bite, and chewing
  • Memory and emotion: recognition and response

Synchronization

Timing strengthens association

Synchronized streams are more readily associated. When timing or expected correspondence breaks, perception becomes strained.

  • Audio-video drift makes conferencing feel unnatural.
  • Visual and vestibular conflict can create discomfort in virtual reality.
  • Lip reading depends on synchronized visual and auditory matter.

Attention as demultiplexing

Focus prioritizes; it does not begin reception.

Executive control dynamically allocates reasoning bandwidth across concurrent communication channels, amplifying some while suppressing others to support coherent reasoning traversal.

Internal communication multiplex

The internal fabric remains active.

Memory recall, imagination, internal dialogue, emotion, prediction, and reflection continue generating communication matter even without external sensory input. This provides a bridge to dreaming, imagination, memory, and reasoning.
